This video shows a man training with the iPong (or Table Tennis Buddy). If you question the durability of the iPong, I suggest you watch this movie. Part way through the movie a chunk of the iPong pops off because the guy who is practicing, hits it with a ping pong ball. I am not certain if this piece is supposed to come off or not, but it is a little concerning that it pops off when a ball collides with the Table Tennis Buddy. It would be nice to be able to translate what the narrator is saying (can anybody help?). Going back to the YouTube video, I really like the configuration that these guys are using to train with their iPong. A net system is great, because almost all the balls stay near the table. If you have an iPong, I strongly suggest that you setup a net system to easily gather the balls.

A ping pong robot net can be easy to make – if you get a good plan. I like to use a big bed sheet draped over the far side of the ping pong table. What you use to hold up parts of the sheet will vary from one situation to the next. You may want to put a big bucket or laundry basket under the end of the table to collect the balls. Do you have your own homemade net system?

Do you think your child is a talented ping pong player? Check out this kid who is apparently 4 years old.

This girl has some serious ping pong skills! Clearly she has a great instructor – something I know I wish I had during my childhood. So I know this could seem weird, but just go with it…lets break down her table tennis skills.

Pieces of her game that are already in place:

- correct grip (shakehand grip)

- clean backhand (with rollover topspin)

- great forehand (waits for the ball to get into her swing and rotates her shoulders)

- consistency (during the second half of the movie she keeps it on the table for quite a while)

I know what you are thinking – “I would beat her with my left hand.” While that may be true, keep in mind that she is FOUR YEARS OLD! She only attempts one serve, (and totally misses) but it does seem like serving would be her weak point. However, serving seems to be tricky for any child, because they are so low near the table (more like doing an overhead tennis serve). In addition, there is little or no footwork. Bottomline – in two or three years (when she enters 2nd grade!), I don’t want to have to challenge her.

Have you seen the PK1 table tennis robot made by Prakttismate? I am thoroughly impressed! The guy in the movie above is doing a ping pong workout against the prakttismate, and I must say he is struggling. There is no doubt – Prakttismate robot won. I have never actually tested a Prakttismate, and I guess they are about $1300, but wow is that impressive. I will be looking for more videos of a Prakttismate. If you are aware of any please let me know.

When training it is important to develop a grip on the paddle that will allow you to easily improve your game. Some grips are very hard to develop a part of the game and can even injure your wrist or elbow because of the awkward movements necessary to perform certain shots. For example, the grip that I personally used until a year ago called the whirlwind makes it hard to really develop hard forehand smashes. However, the whirlwind is very strong with any backhand shot. The whirlwind grip is not a very good grip because it can cause injury due to the unorthodox type of forehand smash. In addition, it became clear to me that my game was starting to plateau and I could not really improve it because of the limitations in my grip.

After choosing to incorporate the forehand grip shown in the movie above, I have been able to really move my forehand to the next level. At first it was very awkward and I used a ping pong robot to practice the same exact shot over and over. Eventually I became confident enough to keep long volleys going with my opponents who I played before my change in grip. If you are considering a new grip I suggest you find a coach who can advise you and try to get access to a ping pong robot that can help you develop it quickly.

So you are looking for table tennis equipment that will help you improve your ping pong skills. A device – called a ping pong robot – that will accomplish this may be less affordable than you think. The cost of many ping pong robots run over $499 and all the way up to $3000! For $3000 you can expect a very smart robot with digital technology providing: precise regulation of ball speed, pre-determined wait time between ball services, exact ping pong ball landing location and fixed head oscillation. In fact, a company if vietnam has even created a real-time intelligent control ping-pong-playing robot called TOPIO 3.0 that can return every shot you can give it. The bipedal humanoid uses two hi-tech cameras to track the movement of the ball as it leaves your paddle.

To be sure you are investing in the right ping pong robot, it is important to read reviews. I have provided reviews on many devices including newgy robo pong 2040, super master table tennis robot, ipong, ttmatic 505b and the newgy robo pong 2050. However, you may not want to pay such a steep price for a ping pong robot. If this is the case, you can still use a ping pong robot to improve your skills. You can make one yourself using the plans that I found here. These plans to make a handcrafted table tennis robot include pictures and a list of tools and supplies necessary to complete your own do-it-yourself ping pong robot.

Mytabletennis.net hosts one of the best ping pong forums on the world wide web. Occasionally I read up on the latest posts, and recently I found some interesting complaints about a ping pong robot. The ping pong robot is called the Super Master Table Tennis Robot and it looks very similar to a Newgy Robo Pong 2040. It is made by a Chinese company – seems like a knock-off. Website quote, “This is a fraudulent robot company, that encourages fraudulent distributors. I have been scammed by the user here selling this robot in the FS (for sale) section.” According to this complaint:
- the seller doesn’t accept cc payment even through paypal – has to be check payment, and he waits for the money to hit his account until he ships the box
- the robot shows clear user marks, which seller claimed were due to ‘shipping’ however it arrived in a pre-opened box inside of the packing box
- seller has listed multiple forum usernames and bumps his own threads
- the robot doesn’t work properly as the head is loose and falls down due to overuse.
- buyer offered to send it back and pay the return shipping to china, but the seller will not accept it

My take:
Beware of the table tennis robot called Super Master. The name alone should cause you to be cautious. The cheapest price I could find for a Super Master ping pong robot is $400. It looks like a pretty good replica of the Robo Pong 2040, but I am sure the Super Master is lacking in quality.

You have been playing table tennis for years – now you want to really get serious about the sport. Train with a table tennis robot to achieve the level of play you are dreaming of. Problem – you don’t want to buy a table tennis robot…solution – build your own. Have you made a birdhouse, toolbox or reassembled a radio before? Then you are certainly skilled enough to build your own table tennis robot. As a suggestion, choose a model that is simple. However, it cannot be so simple that the model will cause the table tennis balls to jam. Check out YouTube if you would like more ideas about homemade table tennis robots.

Don’t worry – you don’t have to buy an expensive table tennis robot to improve your game…make one for a fraction of the cost. Some people have reportedly built their own table tennis robots for less than $40. Keep in mind that the cheapest manufactured table tennis robot (ipong) is $150 plus shipping and handling. Even though it is not a huge price tag, it certainly isn’t cheap. Don’t buy an expensive table tennis robot – build one.

If you want to have a simple table tennis robot but do not really understand the process involved, then you have come to the right spot. You can make your own table tennis robot that is easy to use and great to train with. To have a ping pong robot, you have to have three components:

- a hopper to hold and feed the balls

- a spout to direct the balls

- a device to propel the balls forward

There are many different table tennis robot models around that feature special abilities, but these can cost a hefty sum of money and be difficult to use. Oneofakindtrading.com.au makes a good point:

You may purchase the best robot in the world, but without knowing how to use it properly, you’ve likely wasted your money. Some robots come with extensive manuals and support, whereas others come with just a manual describing the functionality, without telling you how to use it. Now if you’re a robot guru, or you know people that have experience in using it, this may not matter, but if not then this should be a major consideration.

The way you spend your money is up to you. I suggest you consider building your own ping pong robot so that you can determine what it is that you really desire in a ping pong robot. You can build your ping pong robot with detailed plans; homemade ping pong robot!  The e-book will only cost you $9.95 and the supplies to build the table tennis robot will only cost you about $40. You will not find a ping pong robot for $50…maybe $500.

What is the best way to train?

Here is the scenario…you have to play against a playa who smashes his forehand. Typically the best strategy will be keeping the ball at the opponents backhand.

~ What is the best technique to keep the ball on the opponents backhand?

I suggest you practice returning using forehand shots to the opponent’s left hand corner (against a righty).

-> Try to land the ball in an imaginary box, one foot by one foot in the corner
